SOURCE provided a drinking tube 1.5 Meter / 5 Feet long for perfect hydration in mid-air
pinksky

In spring, Petra, a passionate paraglider pilot based in Germany, got in touch with us, stating how happy she is with her SOURCE Hydration System – except that the standard length tube is too short for her paraglider rig. For comfortable use we supplied a 1.5meter (5 feet) custom made drinking tube, to upgrade her Hydration System. Thanks to the SOURCE Quick Connect feature (connecting/disconnecting drinking tube and valve without leaking), replacing the tube with a longer one was no technical issue. Now with the enhanced SOURCE Hydration System, Petra reports much more comfortable access to her drinking valve during her flights of up to 2 hours and 50km of distance. She usually carries 2 to 3 liters of water, always happy to have some left for the way home. Depending on the landing-spot it can mean hiking for some time after landing.Just recently she sent us pictures from Chile (see below) where she was enjoying the paragliding-season with pilots covering hundreds of KM in flights up to 9 hours of duration. While hot temperatures are usually not an issue for paragliders – Petra’s highest flight took her to 3,347m above sea level in chilly temperatures below zero – hydration is a key concern for any longer flight. Our developers were curious to see the custom-made drinking tube installed, and these are the great pictures Petra provided. Anita Bjornsdottir and Aslaug

Anita Bjornsdottir and Aslaug Einarsdottir

Female Icelandic paraglider pilots, Anita Bjornsdottir and Aslaug Einarsdottir, are about to embark upon a two-year paragliding adventure with an added twist: to raise global awareness of issues such as women’s rights and gender equality, and to learn about the lives of women in different cultures. “We intend to approach this matter in a positive way, as well as taking certain risks ourselves to make our dreams come true”, says Anita.

Anita learned to fly in June 2007 and now has 100 hours airtime, but Aslaug has only three, having learned this summer. “That is why we are starting our project in Nepal in December”, Anita explains, “to gain more experience in stable air and friendly surroundings, before taking on the rest of the world”.

The YouTube clip above shows their planned journey and timescales, and the pair plan to begin just before Christmas, having given away or sold all of their posessions.

The project is in collaboration with UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) in Iceland. The women, both qualified graphic designers, plan to use their skills to m aintain a website for all to present their own definitions of freedom; to give women the opportunity to communicate to the world through words, photographs, videos and drawings, their views on freedom, ideas and dreams, which will then be presented as an exhibition.

paragliding Bowden takes title again

Bowden takes title again

Bowden takes title again
Wilderness resident and paraglider Khobi-Jane Bowden has won the South African Women’s Paragliding Championships for the second time.
GEORGE NEWS - For the second year in a row, Wilderness resident and fulltime instructor at Cloudbase Paragliding school, Khobi-Jane Bowden took the honours and thus achieved her goal to represent South Africa in the bi-annual Paragliding World Championships which this year will be held in Piedrahita, Spain, from 2 to 18 July.

Selection for the South African team is based on your results in the World Paragliding Ranking System for the two years prior to the World Championships. This international system ranks pilots for each competition they enter, be it national or international.
Khobi-Jane has been paragliding since 2001. After a three year apprenticeship as an assistant instructor, she received her instructor’s rating in November 2005.

Khobi is a passionate competition pilot and was in the running for the South African national team in 2007 and again in 2009, but work commitments ruled her out of making the team.

Khobi-Jane, together with her husband Jan Minnaar, then committed to achieving her goal and entered overseas competitions to get international experience, as well as attending all the rounds of the SA Paragliding Cup in South Africa.

Khobi has done extremely well since her first full year of competition in 2009, winning the SA Paragliding Cup Ladies Championship in 2009 and 2010, placing 2nd in the SAPC Sports Class, winning the international SA Winelands Open in 2009 and 2010 and the Sports class in 2009. At the pre World Championship in Spain last year, where 150 international pilots took part, Khobi was the 3rd lady.

Currently placed 10th overall in South Africa, Khobi is the only lady on the South African National Paragliding team. Her teammates are Russell Achterberg, Andre Rainsford and Henry Schurink from Gau-teng.
Her husband, Jan, who was a team member at the 1993 World Championships in Verbier, Switzerland, and has been a full time instructor since 1992, sits on the management team along with Martin Van Der Merwe and Cyril Mazibuko.

Seiko Fukuoka Sets New Women’s Paragliding Record in Brazil

نویسنده: parapink5 learning training paragliding |

Seiko Fukuoka. Photo: Felix Wolk

Seiko Fukuoka has set a new women’s world record in Brazil. She flew 345.6km on 20 November, beating the previous world record by more than 20km.

According to her tracklog she took off in Quixada in the north east of Brazil and flew for a little over 10 hours. She was flying a Niviuk Icepeak 6.

The previous world record was held by Kamira Pereira who flew 324.7km on 14 November 2009.

The season in Quixada has been a good one so far, with several pilots flying more than 400km. A team of Sol Pilots has been chasing the world record of 502km, although that has eluded them so far.

The best flying was in late October, when half a dozen pilots from the Sol Team flew together for 460km. On the same day the longest flight of the season was flown by Olympio Faissol – he flew 470.39km on 22 October 2012.

Quixada in north eastern Brazil attracts pilots from across the world in October and November when strong, consistent winds set up, meaning pilots can fly far. Because of its position on the equator pilots can take off very early in the morning – 7am in some cases – and fly distance until sunset at around 5.30pm.

Ager Women’s Open 2011: Day 3

نویسنده: parapink5 learning training paragliding |

Day three: ‘My best task ever… and all for nothing as the task is stopped.’ Judith Mole reports

Today we assumed would be a write-off, with an occluded front coming through and possible thunderstorms later. However, having done a final check Nicky told us all not to get too drunk, as there may be a window of opportunity.

On waking up there was already a lot of cirrus and wave was apparent over the high Pyrenees. We went up the hill regardless and the task committee set a zig zag round the valley task. This would allow Nicky, the meet head, to keep us in sight and to be able to monitor

Freeze Frame: Paragliding Worlds 2015

نویسنده: parapink5 learning training paragliding |

Paragliding World Championships
Touchdown! At the Paragliding World Championships in Colombia.
What do you get when you mix 150 racing paraglider pilots and Colombia’s world class Roldanillo flying site in the middle of January? One great South American cocktail – the best Paragliding World Championships in years.
In January we headed south to photograph and report on Roldanillo 2015 – and we haven’t stopped talking about it since. We shot over 3,000 stills and made dozens of short movies – many of which we shared on Facebook and around the web, both through the official competition website, our channels, and others.
For the magazine we chose our absolute top picks – the ones that might not have got the most likes on Facebook, but the ones that meant something to us and had a story behind them. Through them we tell the story of the competition, including the highs, the lows, the great flying and the amazing people.
The result is Freeze Frame, our tribute to the Paragliding World Championships 2015. Published across eight pages in Cross Country issue 158.

AGER WOMEN’S OPEN 2011: DAY 1

AGER WOMEN’S OPEN 2011: DAY 1

British pilot and blogger Judith Mole explains, ‘How to do everything wrong and still get to goal’

Well, registration went well. We’re 32 women from a multitude of countries. Laurie Genovese has decided not to attend the Pre-Euros and fly in what may be the last ever Open Class competition. She missed out on the top spot when she got food poisoning on the last task in 2010 and is hoping to make up for it this year.

Practice day had two flying opportunities, both in the middle of the day and in the evening, when Nicky Moss and I arrived last on take-off and expected a top to bottom. What everyone in the air encountered was classic Áger restitution… it got liftier as the evening progressed. I got down just before night fall, but some people landed in the dark, including our esteemed meet director, who had to be retrieved at 10.30pm.

All smiles on launch on Day 1

All smiles on launch on Day 1

With a forecast of possible storms later, today’s task was a four turnpoint 47km zig zag round the valley and then a dash over the back. Basically (if you know Áger), from the main Col de Ares launch to a start in the valley over the village of Agullo, then to the end of the ridge to the east, then turnpoint over Áger Camping, back to the highest point of the ridge at Sant Alis, then over the back to the Castell del Mur and goal at Vilamijana.

Task committee is made up of Nicky Moss, Nicole McLearn (Canada), Sabah Boudaoua (Morocco/Spain) and Domenica Bender Tcacenco (Brazil).

Conditions were mixed and I nearly went down just after the start. We were thermalling left before the start and as soon as one o’clock arrived I was back in my comfort zone. Roll on tomorrow when we turn the proper way.

Sorting gear on launch, Day 1

Sorting gear on launch, Day 1

Somehow I managed to do everything wrong today. Following others (when I fly better when making my own decision), going to the worst possible places on the ridge to find thermals and generally farting about getting further and further behind.

Thankfully I like a good scratch, so I got back up from the lower ridge… you wouldn’t have thought I was able to thermal from my display today. Laurie had lapped me by TP1 and my heart was sinking. What saved my flight was that I can soar. A ridge is a ridge, regardless of how big it is and I managed to squeeze past the serve and volley brigade (otherwise known as the ‘thermal and glide guys’).

Why bother turning, when you can just fly straight and get there faster? I got stuck again on the higher ridge after the Sant Alis turnpoint and couldn’t find a strong enough thermal to take me safely over the ridge.

After giving myself a good talking to I finally blundered into a corker when I was distracted by a potential accident… no skill, just pure luck. From base, it was a dog leg glide into goal, where by some miracle I arrived 10th. Obviously I wasn’t the only one having an interesting day. So I have exactly the same result this year as I had on day one of last year. Tenth overall and highest placed DHV1/2. It’s all uphill from here!

Convincing winner was Laurie Genovese (France), who blitzed round the course. Provisionally second is Daniela Hofer (Switzerland) and third Patty Gracia de Letona (Mexico).

With 14 in goal there were many happy faces at HQ. Tomorrow looks good for another early task and the task committee did well choosing a good first run to get us all going and accustomed to the conditions.

And at present we have no live tracking… some other comp stole our toys. Still, it’s not all bad… we stole their staff in return. More tomorrow…

WOMEN’S PARAGLIDING OPEN SWITCHES TO KOBARID, SLOVENIA

نویسنده: parapink5 learning training paragliding |

Launching from Ager during a previous Women's Paragliding Open. Photo: WPO

The International Women’s Paragliding Open has had a change of venue. Instead of Italy the competition will now be held in Slovenia. The economic downturn is to blame, the organisers said in a statement:

Despite lots and lots of hard work by the Italian local organiser and colleagues, the Women’s Open was not able to secure the financial sponsorship needed to run the competition in Italy.

With the economic situation as it is, it is now hard to find support from local municipalities and companies. However, the Women’s Open organisation team are committed to the event and in order to have a successful competition the venue has changed to Slovenia.

The Women’s Open will now be based near Kobarid, a venue of many successful competitions, including the British Open, the Serial Cup and many more. It is a stunning area and will allow for a variety of tasks.

The dates will be 23-29 September 2012.

More information will be available on the competition website very soon.
